The Mythology of Place
Since moving to New York, I’ve been struck by how much energy the people of this city invest in maintaining the image and allure of NYC. It seems like every other issue of New York magazine and Time Out New York feature the best this-or-that of NY, reasons to love NY, etc etc. In December, the city hung charming strings of lights over East Village side streets — this felt like choreography, a way of accentuating how charming NY can be in winter…a way of telling the story of the city back to itself.

Judging People by Their Books
We all know not to judge a book by its cover – but what about judging a person based on the book they’re reading?
Over at CoverSpy, “a team of publishing nerds hit the subways, streets, parks & bars to find out what New Yorkers are reading now.” Admirably, the authors refrain from judgment, offering instead only the briefest observational detail; about the man reading What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, we know only that he is 30 (their guess), has a dark mustache, and is wearing Reeboks (more…)
